Nick Bester (60), who is most fondly known for winning the Comrades Marathon in 1991, and is also an ironman triathlete, was savagely attacked by three men while he was training on Saturday [August 29]. He is currently in the ICU in hospital, where more tests are being conducted.
Pictures of a Bester with his face and leg covered in blood were circulated on social media. It is alleged that Bester was preparing for Battle of the Sports when the incident occurred.
His son Shaun Nick Bester confirmed the attack on Instagram. In a post he said he dad was training in the Magaliesberg Mountains close to his home when he was attacked from behind.
“They continued to hit him breaking 3 ribs, his cheek bone and he has a lot of trauma to the head and cut all over his body. They took of his clothes and tied him up and left him in the mountain. He managed to escape down the mountain by sliding on his back until he was right against someone’s fence,” said Shaun.
More scans are being conducted currently.
This is the second incident of this nature. Back in 2010 he was training in Pretoria when he was viciously beaten and threatened at knifepoint. His attackers also made off with his bike.
