The Western Cape now finds itself in a “steep [third] wave” with an average of 1 969 new Covid-19 cases recorded per day.

The Head of Health, Dr Keith Cloete confirmed this by saying, “We are in a steep 3rd wave, driven by the Delta variant and urge everyone to adhere strictly to protective behaviours, as a key drive to contain it. We anticipate that the 3rd wave could be as high as the 2nd wave. We await revised modelling from the SACMC, to re-calibrate our response.”

According to IOL, there has been an acceleration in the curve as every 10 cases reported has an additional 1.2 infections. Currently, there are 24 010 active cases in the province, with an additional 6 402 active cases than it was in the past week. This reveals a 36% increase.

Premier Alan Winde urges the public to start being more vigilant to reduce the high possibility of getting infected.

“I urge heightened vigilance during this time, as the risk of getting infected is increasing. You must do everything possible to protect yourself and your loved ones, so that we flatten the curve, protect our health system, and save lives,” Winde said.

An additional 38 deaths were recorded on the Western Cape’s dashboard since it was last updated on Wednesday. The total number of deaths now stands at 12 771 while 540 713 vaccines have been administered to the public to date.
