The National Department of Health has announced that the coronavirus death toll in the country has risen by two more fatalities. The two new deaths are both from the KwaZulu-natal province, and include an 80-year-old man and 81-year-old woman.
The number of positive cases has risen to 1 505, and these stretch across the country.
Government yesterday had meetings in which they discussed some relaxation of lockdown rules to ensure the economy would not suffer too hard during the 21-day period. It was decided that informal traders will be able to operate between 8am and 6pm, provided they have a permit.
Minister of Police Bheki Cele is not relenting in his decision to prohibit the sale of cigarettes across the country. There is some confusion among those who live in the Western Cape, however, as Premier Alan Winde says the sale of cigarettes will go ahead while Cele begs to differ.
South Africa stands at number 43 with the highest infection rate, among the 204 countries currently battling the coronavirus pandemic. The numbers vary on a daily basis as updates continue to stream in. On Thursday, April 2, the world reached a global milestone – in just four months more than one-million people have been infected with COVID-19.
The virus which first surfaced in Wuhan, China has claimed the lives of 54 045 worldwide. Of the 1 026 715 people infected globally, 218 586 have recovered from it.
