Dr Fuad Jakoet, a beloved Bo-Kaap doctor and resident has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Dr Jakoet’s close family, he was admitted to hospital last night [June 2] with a case of pneumonia. He was then subsequently diagnosed with COVID-19 after further testing was conducted.
In light of this unfortunate news, Dr Jakoet’s family have asked that the Bo-Kaap community and Cape Town as a whole keep him in prayers during these trying times.
Despite the country entering Level 3 of the nationwide lockdown on Monday [June 1], the Bo-Kaap Community Response Team urges the entire community to maintain good personal hygiene when out in public, adhere social distancing regulations, and to remain united in the fight against COVID-19.

On June 1, it was reported that a fourth Tygerberg hospital employee has died the coronavirus. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) is now appealing to the Western Cape Health Department for help.
In early May, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced that over 500 healthcare workers have tested positive for COVID-19.
Reports suggest that the Western Cape will reach its peak in July, which has led many to fear for the safety of healthcare workers across the province.
As of June 2, the Western Cape has 10 097 active cases of COVID-19 and 23 095 confirmed cases. An additional 41 COVID-19 deaths have also been reported, bringing the total number of deaths in the Western Cape to 562.
