The Western Cape has reported 3243 active COVID-19 infections, with a total of 291 300 people having been infected with the virus to date. 276 312 recoveries were also reported as of May 21. 99 799 vaccines have been administered by the Western Cape government thus far.
Premier Alan Winde reiterated that the Western Cape is experiencing a resurgence in COVID-19 cases and calls on all residents to practice the safe behaviours that they learnt over the past year.
“Our behaviour will determine when the third wave starts and will affect our healthcare system’s ability to respond. Together, we can flatten the curve and lessen its impact, ” Winde said.

Here is a breakdown of the province’s COVID-19 figures :
- Total confirmed number of people ever infected with COVID-19 in WC 291 300
- Total recoveries 276 312
- Total deaths 11 745
- Total active cases (currently infected patients) 3243
- Tests conducted 1 601 278
- Hospitalisations 786, of which 179 are in high care or ICU
Meanwhile, 11 additional deaths have been reported since the province’s last update on Thursday, May 20, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 11 745.
