At least 100 traditional leaders in the Western Cape are reportedly undergoing Covid-19 training, as they gear up for the winter initiation season.

According to eNCA, the training is aimed at equipping the traditional leaders with skills on how best they can carry out the initiation practice under COVID-19 protocols.

The province’s Arts and Culture Department has hailed the move, saying this is a “proactive initiative”.

A report by EWN quoted the provincial department as saying that it “hosted consultations with traditional leaders and Somagwaza Institute, resulting in the co-creation of the first draft of the standing operating procedures for initiation practice under COVID-19 conditions in the Western Cape”.

The sacred practice was brought to a standstill last year under Level 3 Lockdown. SA News reported at the time that the move was aimed at mitigating exposure against COVID-19.
