Following two weeks of hospitalisation, Mayor of the Langeberg Municipality Henry Jansen (64) has died from COVID-19. Jansen passed away on Tuesday, July 7 and is survived by his wife and children.
Jansen served as the Mayor of Langeberg for the past four years and was well-liked among his peers and residents. He is remembered as a pillar of the local community and a man who has left behind a positive legacy, reports The South African.
Before he developed symptoms consistent with COVID-19, Jansen was being treated for pneumonia and eventually succumbed to the virus at Worcester Mediclinic.
During lockdown Level 5, Jansen had charges raised against him after being pictured hugging councillor Niklaas Beginsel during a meeting in Worcester, following Beginsel’s release from prison.
KwaZulu Natal-based ANC spokesperson and former mayor of KwaDukuza, Ricardo Mthembu has also died due to COVID-19 on Wednesday July 8. So far the virus has claimed 3502 lives in South Africa with more than 215 000 cases recorded since March this year.
