The African National Congress (ANC) wants Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Nora Grose to step down after she appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on fraud and money laundering charges, a report says.
The ward councillor from Table View handed herself over to the police ahead of her court appearance.
She was granted bail of R10 000.
“Residents of Cape Town must see the DA for what it is. They’ve been making a lot of noise about the corruption in the ANC. I can see now, the DA councillors are beginning to defend and protect Grose, talking about innocent until proven guilty. What hypocrites,” EWN quoted ANC’s Xolani Sotashe as saying.
Gross was accused of colluding with Reuben Swartz, the chairperson of the South African Religious Civic Organisation to access R170 000 in humanitarian aid earmarked for food parcels in Atlantis.
“She allegedly facilitated the Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (Ters) funding along with the chairperson of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called the SA Religious Civic Organisation (Sarco).
Grant conditions
“Those funds were allegedly used for personal gain,” Times Live quoted the Hawks as saying.
Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town on Thursday said it was working with authorities to recover unspent funds transferred from an Atlantis-based NGO to a church in contravention of grant conditions.
According to IOL, Mayor Dan Plato said in a statement that he had noted the “charging of a councillor related to this matter and (the City) will continue to offer its full assistance to the Hawks in this regard’’.
“The City’s legal services department have been working with authorities for some time. They advise me that, based on the information available to the City, this is not a criminal matter and that records show the funds went towards the intended purpose of food relief.
“All allegations regarding malpractice by a City councillor were investigated by the City of Cape Town’s Office of the Speaker and no malpractice was found. I have no doubt the authorities will continue to receive the full cooperation of our officials…”
