The Western Cape became the first province to make strides with the efficient COVID-19 vaccine notification system. This follows the province’s consecutive efforts to ramp up ease of access to the vaccination process in the Western Cape. The notification system is used to inform residents who have registered to receive the vaccine.
In a statement, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the intervention by the provincial government to decentralise the notification system. According to the party’s spokesperson on Health, Wendy Philander, the decentralisation of the notification system helps provide residents with clear answers about where and when to receive their vaccinations. Philander indicated that on Tuesday, May 25, the provincial parliament’s Health Standing Committee experienced first-hand the benefit of this system, as qualifying residents were confident and reassured of the vaccine process. “During the Ad-Hoc Committee on Covid-19 at the provincial parliament, it was further highlighted that residents will be notified approximately 3 days in advance. This gives a good amount of time for recipients to make necessary arrangements ahead of actually receiving the jabs,” Philander said.
The Standing Committee on Health also conducted unannounced oversight visits on Wednesday, May 26, to the Mitchell’s Plain, Eerste River, and Nyanga vaccination centres. “At our next visit, we will focus on vaccination centres outside of the Metro, as the provincial government brought online an additional 51 sites this week., ” Philander added. A recipient at the Mitchell’s Plain Community Clinic said: “I was very excited and couldn’t wait to get my vaccine. I came here at 08:00 this morning and all went smoothly. The staff were professional and polite, so I want to congratulate and thank them. My message is for everyone over 60 is to register and get vaccinated”. Meanwhile, the Western Cape Government also confirmed that the number of vaccination sites in the province will increase to 53 on Monday, May 24.
