The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister of Health, Siviwe Gwarube, has laid charges of corruption against Health Minister Zweli Mkhize at the Cape Town Central Police Station on Thursday, June 3. This comes after things were brought to light that Mkhize’s family may have benefitted from proceeds of a R150 million tender that his department allegedly gave to the communications company, Digital Vibes.

As reported by Times Live, Digital Vibes allegedly employed the minister’s former spokesperson and family friend, Tahera Mather, and his former assistant, Naadhira Mitha. These allegations were first revealed by the Daily Maverick, which indicated that Mkhize’s son, Dedani, allegedly received a Land Cruiser from Digital Vibes. The company also allegedly paid for maintenance work on a home allegedly owned by the Mkhize family.
Meanwhile, the DA described the alleged conduct by the minister as “highly irregular” and constituted an abuse of power.
“Our scope for action may be limited compared to what Ramaphosa can do as Head of the Executive, but rest assured we will do everything in our power to keep the corrupt away from public money.”
“Zweli Mkhize must be held accountable for the R150 million dodgy contract,” the DA said.
While Ramaphosa remains silent on Minister Zweli Mkhize, we commit to taking action in the interest of the public.
These criminal charges are just the first step. Citizens need to see the same commitment from their President.
Ultimately, all citizens want are #JabsNotVibes. ?? https://t.co/1oRI7igXiB
