On Monday, July 5, a total of 12 513 new Covid-19 cases were reported in South Africa, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 075 409.

According to data from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), more than one in four people who are tested for the virus are showing a positive Covid-19 result, and this increase reveals a 31.6% positivity rate.

This comes after the National Department of Health reported an additional 331 Covid-19 related deaths, which means that the country’s death toll now stands at 62 171 while an increase of 566 hospital admissions have been reported in a 24 hour cycle.

According to IOL, most of these new infections have stemmed from the Gauteng region, accounting for 60% of new infections. The Western Cape followed at 10% while Limpopo stands at 7%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 6% and North West and Mpumalanga each 5%.

The Eastern Cape accounted for 3%, the Free State 2% and the Northern Cape 1%.

The Department of Health said that it was now ramping up South Africa’s vaccine rollout where people over the age of 50 will not have to wait until July 15 to register for their vaccination on the EVDS system.

Meanwhile, private companies like Discover and Dis-Chem will begin vaccinating the public without medical aid. This comes after the government committed to reimburse them.
