Rumours have begun circulating that embattled Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille, may retract her previous resignation – this comes seven days before the resignation takes official effect.
City councillors are expected to consider the recommendation of an investigator’s report that will be released on Thursday, and will provide a guideline for how De Lille should be policed following alleged attempts to cover up the misconduct of a senior City manager.
Reports revealed that she was considering withdrawing her resignation until the issues raised in the report are resolved. Her spokesperson, Zara Nicholson, said that the mayor would release a statement detailing her exact plans.
Former Western Cape Community Safety MEC, Dan Plato, who is De Lille’s predecessor as mayor, was selected by the DA’s Federal Executive (FedEx).
A 2‚000-page investigation report conducted by Bowman Gilfillan claimed that De Lille and former city manager, Achmat Ebrahim, broke the law when they failed to inform the council about irregular payments in 2015.
It claimed that De Lille did this by attempting to influence Ebrahim not to forgo his legal obligations‚ but he refused to do so.
Other officials are also negatively implicated in the report, and includes Mayco for Transport and Urban Development‚ Brett Herron‚ and suspended Transport and Urban Development Authority commissioner, Melissa Whitehead.
