The 59-year-old Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi, has passed away due to Covid-19 related complications, police said on Friday.

Mfazi joined the police 39 years ago and during this period, he held a number of executive roles.

According to a statement released, Mfazi held the position of Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Corporate Services in the Western Cape from 2003 to 2008. In 2008, he transferred to the Eastern Cape where he held the position of Provincial Head: Crime Intelligence until 2018.

In 2018, he then moved to the National Head Office in Pretoria following his appointment by the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Khehla Sitole to the position of Deputy National Commissioner: Management Advisory Services.

From March 2020 up until his passing, Lieutenant General Mfazi held the position of Deputy National Commissioner: Crime Detection, a position in which he was appointed in line with the new structure.

“The SAPS has lost one of its reliable, dedicated and greatly respected leaders in the organisation. Lieutenant General Mfazi led by example and served this country with distinction until his death,” National Commissioner General Sitole said.

The memorial and funeral details will be announced in due course, the statement added.
