A 28-year-old man has become the 12th driver apprehended for speeding in the Karoo during the festive season. According to Western Cape Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, the man was travelling at a speed of 162 kilometres per hour between Aberdeen and Beaufort West – in a 120 kilometre per hour zone.

The suspect drove at this high speed with three passengers in tow, and has been detained at the Beaufort West Police Station.

Arrests for various road traffic offenses have spiked since the beginning of December, with 337 suspects being apprehended for driving under the influence alone.

The City of Cape Town’s Executive Director for Safety and Security, Richard Bosman, said that both the City’s Metro Police Department and Cape Town Traffic Services have been working to ensure the safety of drivers across the Western Cape.

“The City’s Metro Police Department has arrested 77 motorists, while Cape Town Traffic Services has made 260 arrests for drunk driving at various road blocks,” he said.

The  337 arrests exclude those made during the course of normal operations, including  road block areas.
