As the Eastern Cape battles with an ongoing drought that has left much of the province without water, the Mukuti Stud Alpacas are looking for a new place to call home.

Mukuti Stud is a small alpaca breeding farm based in the Eastern Cape that makes exquisite yarns and garments from alpaca fleece to support and feed a small heard of cheerful alpacas. They aim to breed healthy, happy alpacas and improve South Africa’s overall alpaca breeding core.

In recent years the little herd has come into difficulty as they struggle to survive with water in the area running dry. The once grassy plains have been replaced with dry sandy landscapes, forcing Mukuti Stud to look for a new home for their alpaca family.

The dry conditions the heard was living in.

Yesterday, December 26, 2019, Mukuti announced that their herd is on the move and in need of help as they desperately search for greener pastures.

“The Eastern Cape is completely running out of water – the veld is in a state where it will take more than one season to repair/revive, even if it rained. With immediate effect we have to move our core herd to a new location,” said Mukuti on their Facebook page.

Nearly ten years ago when the alpaca herd had green fields to live in, before the drought hit.

According to Mukuti, nine female alpacas – seven of which are pregnant – and eight males are being relocated out of necessity.

Mukuti has also made an appeal to the public for anyone who can help the herd board and relocate to the Western Cape. They are currently in Nieu Bethesda and in dire need of any assistance they can get.

If you or anyone you know can help the alpaca herd, you can contact Mukuti at Tel: +27 (0)21 855 1441, Cel: +27 (0)83 456 2545 /6 or [email protected].
