Thirty-five people are reported to have died on the Western Cape’s roads over the course of the Easter long weekend this year. Last year, 27 people died as a result of road accidents during the same time period, and Western Cape traffic officials had hoped to reduce the death count by at least 50% this year.
Most of the victims are reported to have been pedestrians. The accident that caused the most fatalities over the weekend was one that happened in Caledon yesterday, when eight died during a head-on collision.
A male biker found himself in a perilous position when he crashed into the sand dunes of Atlantis on the weekend, and had to be airlifted to Netcare Blaauwberg.
According to Arrive Alive, the Western Cape Department of Health EMS responded to the primary call. The biker’s current condition is not yet known.
