Western Cape Minister of Community Safety Albert Fritz has accused the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) of fanning the flames of violence and instability in the province.
Fritz said this while presenting his department’s R739-million budget for the 2021/22 financial year, IOL reported on Thursday
“Let me state that the EFF is a big part of our problem in terms of stability in this province. They don’t stop the violence, they cause the violence,” Fritz was quoted as saying.
Fritz’s remarks came after EFF provincial chairperson Melikhaya Xego had accused his department of neglecting poor communities.
“The recent killings of our people, six of them in Mfuleni, is a clear sign that the safety plans by this department are not anywhere close to serving the people in a poor area, in particular, our black townships…,” Xego said.
At least six people were killed in separate shootings in Mfuleni last Sunday, raising gun violence concerns in Cape Town.
EWN reported at the time that the shootings started when gunmen took out three men in the area.
“An hour later, another man was shot and killed in the area. That evening two more men were gunned down,” the report said.
