The national power grid is experiencing a series of ups and downs due to breakdowns and illegal connects, according to Eskom, and residents are being urged to use power sparingly to avoid extra strain.

Illegal connections have also caused damage to Eskom systems due to network overloading and the power utility says it cannot afford to continuously repair them.
Currently, they have lost four power units and the return of two units were delayed due to complications. Power plants including Kendal, Majuba, Lethabo, Duvha and Tutuka have been affected, with most of the illegal connects being based in Gauteng.
“Eskom has 31 000MW available total capacity to meet demand tonight. While we expect some units to return to service soon, this situation may persist until the weekend,” they said.
