Many matriculants woke up anxious this morning: January 3 was seen by many as a day of reckoning, as they would find out whether they had attained their Independent Education Board (IEB) qualification. However, the IEB has released its matric results for the class of 2018, which show it has achieved an overall pass rate of 98.92%, and plenty of previously worried students will be breathing a sigh of relief.

The results were released at midnight, and of the 12 372 students who sat for exams, 90.65% achieved bachelors entry. A further 7.33% achieved diploma entry.

Last year, 12 130 students wrote IEB exams.

Students who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams will receive their results on Friday (January 4).

Matrics who have failed their 2018 exam papers or who would like to rewrite them have until January 31 to register for the supplementary June exams.

Part-time students have until March 15 to register. All candidates will need the following to register:

– State of results

– A valid email address

– A valid cell phone number

– A valid ID number

If a candidate does not meet the requirements to write the June exams, there are other options available. They can re-enroll as a full-time candidate for the NSC, which can be completed at an adult education centre, or can register for the adult Amended National Certificate.

Vocational training at a Further Education and Training college (FET) may also be pursued.

NSC students can do the following to view their results as soon as they are live:

– Learners can access their results directly by logging onto the Department of Basic Education’s website here.

– Learners who do not have internet access will be able to obtain their results from a number of South African daily newspapers, but will not be able to see individual subject results.

– Learners also have the options of obtaining their results directly from the schools or learning facilities at which they wrote their exams.

– Learners can download the MatricsMate app directly from their phone’s app store.

Alternatively, matriculants can sign up to the SABC’s SMS service: SMS the learner’s ID and Student number to 35658 or dial *120*35658# to register.

The SMS will tell learners if they have passed or not, and the USSD system (*120*35658#) will deliver their detailed results.

Matriculants can also contact the Department of Education directly by calling 082 152.
