Another fine Cape Town restaurant has fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic. Exhibit A at SŸN, located on the once buzzing Bree Street, has announced it can no longer sustain itself as a result of the economic impact the pandemic has had on the hospitality industry.
“Unfortunately, the ANC and refusal to use our tax money for the good has led to us having to close our doors for good. We hope that they all sleep soundly in their stolen homes, with their expensive cars bought with stolen money. As for us, we’re done funding this circus of lies, blame and denialism. It took a pandemic to wake us up to a very real and very old problem,” the eatery said in a Facebook post. “To our loyal guests, we apologize and appreciate your support as always, but enough is enough.”
Exhibit A was one of many restaurants to parktake in a campaign that grew into an emotion-filled protest to highlight the effects of pandemic on the hospitality industry. The restuarants held up signs showing how many jobs had been lost there since the beginning of lockdown. The curfew and alcohol ban has meant that eateries cannot operate and sustain their staff.
Other Cape Town staples that did not survive lockdown include Velvet Cake Co. and The Perserverance Tavern – though good old Persies hopes to open its doors once lockdown is over and they are able to serve alcohol again.
