The family of Cape Town teacher Mushfiq Daniels, who went missing in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, have deepened the search to include the more rural areas of the city this week. Daniels (28) had been teaching in the city since March 2018 was first reported missing on July 5, 2019.
Speaking to News24, Daniels’ cousin Imaad Isaacs said the family has not yet found any leads on his whereabouts. They have explored 18 hospitals, 12 police stations and various mosques in an effort to find him.
Daniels’ mother Faheema Abrahams, along with his two brothers Raeeq and Nur, arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on July 10 to assist in the search.
“We are at a point where we just have to follow up every single lead and keep the hope as strong as possible and that cannot be easy,” Isaacs said to News24. “I don’t know if the police are going to be [of] any use because from the previous reports of engagements in the Bothma case, it has been two months now and police have been no use in finding and tracking him down.”
The “Bothma case” Isaacs is referring to is that of 22-year-old John Bothma, a Gauteng local who has been missing since May 18.
Bothma had been visiting a friend in Ho Chi Minh City, and his phone has been off since the date of his disappearance. His friends and family have been trying to understand what happened to him.
According to Isaacs, Daniels’ family will be meeting with Bothma’s search team as there have been questions of whether the two cases are related.
“I honestly don’t know what will happen. His mom is hopeful that he will be found in a good state,” Isaacs said.
