Vredehoek community members continue to fight against the demolition of the neighbourhood gem, Deer Park Café. The building has been earmarked for a proposed four-storey apartment development, angering both locals and residents from other parts of the city.
When residents initially heard of the development proposal, they appealed to Heritage Western Cape (HWC) to oppose the demolition. The building, situated on Deer Park Drive, is home to the Woodlands Eatery, Con Brio, and Deer Park Café.
When the community made its appeal it cited an inadequate period for comment and stated the development would not be an appropriate addition to the area.
The HWC has now said that it will need to conduct an urban study to address the social and community amenity value of the Deer Park Café before making its decision on the demolition application.
As reported by IOL, Suma De Bruyn, who is dealing with the matter on the behalf of Vredehoek’s concerned community, said the HWC would require further information before it could make the decision.
However, the HWC recognises Rocklands Road Park, Deer Park Drive and the Table Mountain backdrop all as important heritage sites, which Vredehoek residents hope will tip the scales in Deer Park Café’s favour.
