A fire that started in the Overberg area and spread to Villiersdorp and near Theeswaterskloof Dam towards the direction of the Cape Winelands yesterday has been confirmed to be out of control and still burning, according to The Cape Winelands District Fire Services.
The fire line is strong and the flames are being fanned by strong winds, making it difficult for firefighters to determine a solid line. Many areas have become inaccessible and fire teams will deploy ground groups to areas that pose the highest risk to property.
Franschhoek Pass has been closed as flames are burning on both sides of the road. Firefighters are concerned as the blaze has the potential to develop into a devastating fire. Farmers in the area have been warned about this possible risk.
The Incident Command will be flying over the area to evaluate where ground teams can safely land while still being having the best chance to prevent the flames from spreading.
The Cape Winelands District urges all residents to be vigilant of fire-causing actions as temperatures in the region are predicted to soar today.
