A fire that started early this afternoon is currently raging at the base of Signal Hill and being fanned by a very strong south-easterly wind, causing road closure.
The City’s Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne says property in the area is safe at the moment but mentioned concerns about the fire being stirred by strong winds.
“Currently there is no immediate danger to any property and the fire is still fanned by a very strong south easterly wind,” he said.
Fire and rescue services responded to Quarry Road at the base of Signal Hill at 3.45pm this afternoon.
Four fire engines and water tankers along with an estimated 24 fire fighters on the scene.
“We are assisted by Table Mountain National Parks as well as two contracted helicopters to the fire and rescue services,” said Layne.
Entry to Quarry road has been closed to make way for emergency services.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
Reports by Table Mountain National Park state that the fire is not contained and has now spread upwards on the Signal Hill road.
According to @TableMountainNP the fire is not contained yet and has jumped the Signal Hill Road burning uphill. Please stay clear of the area.
