The Western Cape local government says the fire that broke out at the Caledon Provincial Hospital on Thursday night has been extinguished.

EWN quoted MEC Anton Bredell on Friday, as saying that firefighters were quick to react, as patients were evacuated.

By midnight, all patients were able to return to their beds, the report said.

Smile90.4FM said in a tweet that the cause of the fire remained unknown and was being investigated.

This came after the Charlotte Maxeke Johannseburg Academic Hospital was ravaged by an inferno last week.

News24 reported that the national and provincial government had not yet established when patients and workers would be able to occupy the building again.

Investigators were still establishing the cause of the blaze and an assessment of the damage was being conducted, the report said.
