Along with the struggling soldier of our country, brother Marmite, as we at Cape {town} Etc have come to call it, comes another wounded member of our beloved sauce and spread troop: Heinz Tomato ‘Ketchup’.

While Marmite production has just slowed down, Heinz T-sauce has been discontinued.

As a lover of the tangy goodness, my heart bleeds for the loss of the iconic brand on South African shelves, writes Robyn Simpson. Fries will never be the same again.

And wors rolls? We locals have some major work to do in finding a solid replacement because let me tell you, that transparent ‘tomato sauce’ with the weird red specks has no place on the mighty meal of the nation.

The Managing Executive Foods for PepsiCo SA, Mandy Murphy, told Food24 that Pioneer Foods had been procuring, distributing and selling Heinz Ketchup in South Africa under licence from Kraft Heinz, the fifth-largest food and beverage company in the world.

This licence, however, passed its sell-by-date, expiring at the end of May 2020 and has not been renewed.

Heinz Tomato Ketchup just became the new toilet paper, so stock up on the last few remaining bottles while stocks last in supermarkets.

To the T-sauce of my dreams, Heinz, I bid you an aching farewell. All Gold… howzit.
