An infant, three children and two adults died in a fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday morning in Milnerton. According to a statement by the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, they responded to the blaze at 1.16am in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton.

They were alerted to smoke bellowing from a flat on Nqabe Street. “On arrival it was found to be a flat, alight on the ground floor. At this stage residents informed the staff that there were persons inside the flat,” said Jermaine Carelse, Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson.

After searching the premises, firefighters discovered the bodies of six, while one child managed to escape the blaze with minor injuries.

“The bodies of one adult male and female, two minors and an infant (genders unknown) were discovered inside the flat. A fourth child, a boy aged 14, sustained burn wounds to the head and was treated and transported to a hospital,”added Carelse.

The fire was extinguished in under an hour, and the scene was handed over to South African Police Services (SAPS) for further investigation.
