With the lockdown in full effect, police are cracking down on those breaking the new laws. Yesterday [March 28], five men were arrested in Langa for transporting masses of alcohol worth R100 000.
Members of the City of Cape Town Special Investigation Unit were on duty at Jakes Gerwel Drive in Langa at 11.15am when they pulled over a Double Cab Bakkie. Upon inspection, they found the following contents in the Bakkie:
– 30 boxes of Wellington Brandy alcohol, with each box containing 12 x 750ml Wellington brandy bottles to the total value of R51 000.
– 30 boxes of Smirnoff Vodka, with each box containing 12 x 750ml Smirnoff Vodka bottles to the total value of R50 000.
According to City of Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, five male suspects included the driver of the vehicle were arrested and detained at Saps Langa under the Disaster Management Act, 2002 and Section 27(2) (i), published in the Government Gazette issued 2020/03/25.
Under the lockdown, the selling of alcohol has been prohibited.
“Alcohol abuse is one of the main generators of serious violent crime such as murder, robbery and domestic violence in the Western Cape,” said JP SMith.
