Former CEO of Spur Corporation Pierre van Tonder is reportedly in a critical condition in a Cape Town hospital after he allegedly shot himself in the basement of his Sea Point flat on Sunday morning.

A Daily Maverick report said reasons for the “suicide attempt” remained unknown, although friends said he had been struggling with depression recently.

In a statement,  the current CEO of the Spur Corporation Val Nichas said workers were devastated by the news.

“Everyone at Spur is devastated at the news of our much-loved former colleague and we are doing all we can to support his family. We ask that everyone give his family space to be by Pierre’s side at this most difficult time,” Fin24 quoted Nichas as saying in a statement.

The report said that the 62-year-old Van Tonder had headed Spur for 24 years before his retirement in December last year.

He is a father of two.
