A fire that engulfed both a formal and informal settlement in Cuckoo Crescent, Lotus River claimed the lives of four in the early hours of Tuesday morning, February 18.

At approximately 2am, the City’s Fire & Rescue Service responded to reports of formal and informal structures alight in the area.

Upon arrival the fire crews from Ottery and Wynberg were confronted by both structures alight with a number of bystanders reporting people missing.

Later, the bodies of two men, a woman and a child were found with fatal burn wounds.

The deceased are believed to be a family who were caught in the fire together. The child was reportedly only six years old.

The fire was extinguished at 3.35am and a chaplain was requested to assist the family.
