Following an incident where a man was stabbed to death on Clifton Beach in a suspected robbery on the evening of Saturday September, 28, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has confirmed that four of their students were involved.
The man who was stabbed to death was a UCT student. An arrest is yet to be made and investigation into the details of the case are still underway.
One of the men involved was taken to hospital for further care following the harrowing incident. According to News24, UCT spokesperson Elijah Maholola confirmed that the deceased was a first-year humanities student, who was reportedly originally from KwaZulu-Natal.
The deceased sustained injuries to the chest while the friend was stabbed in the leg. The other two students present during the incidence managed to escape unscathed.
“The incident took place on Saturday, 28 September 2019, early in the evening at Third Beach, Clifton, in Camps Bay. Of the surviving students, one suffered a stabbing assault and was treated in hospital. Though the other two students were not physically harmed. All three surviving students experienced severe shock and trauma from this terrible ordeal,” Maholola told News24.
Currently the name of the student is not being released to the public while the Western Cape police and UCT are in the process of liaising with the family of the student.
“The University of Cape Town is devastated to confirm that four of our students suffered a tragic incident, resulting in an indiscriminate robbery and ensuing violent incident,” said Maholola.
The surviving students will be provided with counselling. The University of Cape Town extended their condolences to the family and wished the other injured student a speedy recovery.
Moholola also noted the institutes sadness at the continuing trend of violent crimes affecting both students and the general community in Cape Town and South Africa at large.
