As of April 1 a number of network providers in South Africa will be doing their part during the nationwide lockdown by offering residents faster internet speeds, free of charge.
Local internet service providers and network operators will be uniting during the lockdown to upgrade customers line speeds, further encouraging citizens to stay at home during the lockdown.
Companies like WebAfrica, Cool Ideas, MWEB, Afrihost, Axxess and RSAWEB will all employ the new offering from April 1 until May 31, 2020 according to MyBroadband.
This comes after an announcement from Vumatel that existing users of its fibre network would receive a speed upgrade, except those with a 1Gbps service.
Vumatel users with a 10Mbps line speed will be upgraded to 20Mbps, 20Mbps will be increased to 50Mbps, 50Mbps will be pushed to 100Mbps, 100Mbps will double to 200Mbps and 200Mbps will become 1Gbps.
According to the fibre network operator, discussions are underway to have as many ISPs as possible join the initiative.
An increase in internet speed is meant to encourage residents to entertain themselves at home during the lockdown and to assist in remote working.
Communication regarding the new service will be sent to users’ emails, better explaining the upgrade from individual providers. Residents are asked to keep an eye on their inbox for further communication in the coming days.
