The Minister of Community Safety, Albert Fritz, has called on all accredited neighbourhood watch (NHW) personnel to obtain an Adjusted Level 4 Travel Permit so that patrols can continue under the new restrictions.
President Cyril Ramaphosa moved the country to level 4 for the next 14 days as COVID-19 infections have rapidly increased around the country.
According to Fritz, under the existing regulations, the NHW will still be allowed to continue their patrols as they remain the eyes and ears of the SAPS and ensure that most communities are kept safe.
He further urged NHW members to get in contact with his department if they have any concerns regarding their NHW structure or accreditation.
Fritz added that NHW members should also take every precaution and protect themselves against infection and transmission of COVID-19.
“This includes taking practical steps such as ensuring patrol vehicles do not transport more than the prescribed number of passengers, ensuring that patrollers wear masks correctly and sanitising regularly, and maintaining a safe social distance while out on patrol,” he said.
NHW members can also visit the Department of Community Safety’s NHW unit by emailing [email protected] where they will be assisted.
