Communities across South Africa are starving and humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, has been working tirelessly to find solutions that help people in need.
In the Southern Cape, Gift of the Givers has decided to go fishing for carp at Groenvlei Lake.
The organisation is flexing their resourceful muscles to bulk up their feeding scheme. Carp was stocked illegally in Groenvlei in the 1800s and is a threat to the indigenous species with their growing numbers.
Roughly 180-tonnes of carp harvested from a lake just outside of Sedgefield is helping the humanitarian aid organisation supply fresh fish to those in need.
In collaboration with CapeNature, the organisation is using the fish from the nearby river to provide an important source of food to locals.
CapeNature needs to eradicate these fish to ensure the biodiversity in the lake is not threatened. Fish is an excellent source of protein that many households in the area will now have access to.
The project feeds over 250 people per day and the organisation has managed to serve over 3000 meals thus far.
“After research, evidence proved that these fish are deemed safe for human consumption (according to the standards required by the Department of Health). The teams immediately started reeling in fish for the community. This high protein meat is sure to feed some hungry homes in the area,” said Gift of the Givers in a Facebook post.
The organisation provides communities around the world with the daily nutrients they need and has identified cooked meals as a crucial need in many areas, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.
