A teenager who was caught on video, allegedly assaulting a fellow pupil, Lufuno Mavhunga, at a Limpopo high school, will remain in custody at a state youth centre after her bail application was postponed to Thursday.

Mavhunga committed suicide after being assaulted outside the school premises last week.

She was repeatedly slapped while other pupils cheered on her attacker and took a video of the incident.

Mavhunga overdosed on prescription pills shortly after the assault and later died at the Siloma Hospital.

IOL reported on Tuesday that the 14-year-old made her second appearance at the Thohoyandou Children’s court where an application to return to her parents’ care was denied.

The teen’s lawyer said the postponement was due to a shortage of magistrates.

The lawyer also said the teen was not doing “particularly well” after she was removed from her family settling.

According to EWN, Lufuno’s family has called for justice.

“We believe that this country has laws that each and every one of us should abide by, so we would like to see justice prevailing,” Lufuno’s family was quoted as saying.
