A school teacher has been fired following the release of a video that’s gone viral on social media, whereby the accused is seen hitting a grade R (0) student on the head at least four times.
The incident happened at Nchuncheko Primary School in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, reports Sowetan Live.
The teacher was dismissed with immediate effect following a disciplinary hearing.
Maggy Chauke, secretary of the school governing body spoke to Sowetan Live, confirming the outcome. It was also reported that the teacher pleaded for leniency during the hearing.
Meanwhile, Gauteng education department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said that the proceedings went according to plan.
“Dismissal is not enough, this teacher deserves to rot in jail,” said the pupil’s great-grandmother, Jostine Seabela, 57, to Sowetan Live.
Seabela also said that the teacher had contacted her after the hearing, saying that she had given her permission to beat the child. She asked the great-grandmother to save her job.
Seabela has allegedly called for social workers to be appointed full-time at the school going forward to help detect early abuse.
