The festive season is a time for family, friends and lots of treats. While many of us are lucky enough to enjoy this time of year to the fullest, there are those who are without. It does not take much to spread a little joy to people who need it the most, so GrandWest did their bit, by hosting a Santa’s Workshop Party for children’s charities last week.
Around 600 hundred children from underprivileged communities got to experience the magic of Santa’s Workshop. The venue was transformed into a winter wonderland filled with exciting activity zones where the children could play and engage.
Thanks to participating outlets like Burger King, the children got to have scrumptious treats while they enjoyed the party. Heidi Edson, GrandWest’s Group Social Economic Development Manager, says the event was absolutely heartwarming.
‘It is a great privilege to host a Christmas party for young and disadvantaged children from our local communities. It gives these children a chance to feel the love, joy and merriment that should surround them at this time of year. It is tremendously heartening to see them playing and enjoying the fun. GrandWest is enormously appreciative of the support and sponsorships that helped make the event possible.’
The children charities included Christine Revell Children’s Home, the SHAWCO Little Star Programme, Saartjie Baartman Centre, Solomons Haven and many more.
The goodwill did not stop there. Volunteers also gathered to package stationery for underprivileged children as part of the annual Santa Shoebox Project on 29 and 30 November 2016. Together they packed some 240 shoeboxes with stationery for Grade R and Grade 1 learners at Easter Peak Primary School in Manenberg. The boxes will be distributed in time for the new school year in January 2017.
