The #Imstaying group on Facebook have offered up a few challenges to encourage people to give back and help others in the community. Their latest call to action is the handbag challenge, in which a handbag is filled with items that a woman living on the street would need.
“Handbag challenge: I started collecting old handbags and filling them with toiletries, biscuits, sweeties, a bottle of water, etc. I keep them in my car, and when I see a struggling woman next to the road, I can bless her with a handbag. Handed out the first two yesterday,” said Carin Stoltz-Urban in her post to the group.
Since posting the challenge last year, other have applauded the challenge and posted pictures of their own bags filled with hygiene and feminine products.
Packs are often made to help woman who are homeless and those who are fleeing a situation of domestic violence. These handbags don’t aim to cover all the recipients needs but rather to help them for a short while.
Some of the products included in these packs are:
- Deodorant
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Pads and tampons
- Face cloth
- Moisturiser
- Clean underwear
- Comb or hairbrush
- Vaseline
- Tissues
- Soap bar
- Shampoo
- Sweets
- Small water bottle
