The public is being called upon by the MEC for Transport and Public Works, Bonginkosi Madikizela, to have their say about Cape Town’s new provincial licence mark.
Capetonians will soon witness the end of the CAA and CA/CY systems and the beginning of a new to-be-confirmed era for Cape Town number plates.
A notice regarding the new plates will soon be published in the form of a Provincial Gazette.
These new number plates are being created to allow for a larger yield to be produced. The current CAA plates only allow 99,999 plates to be produced, whereas the proposed WC system is expected to produce 16-million number plates.
CAA number plates will run out by January 2020 and the George area will begin to receive new CAG plates in the next few weeks.
The new system could affect personalised WP licence numbers and the department is currently considering introducing a five-year transition period allowing the public enough time to move over to the new system.
“Any person or organisation wishing to comment on the content of the intended notice will be requested to lodge the comments in writing before or on the date referred to in the notice as published in the Provincial Gazette,” Bakker told IOL.
Once the date for publishing the Provincial Gazette is finalised, a call for comment will be released.
