The Hawaiian police officers involved in the death of a former South African rugby player will not be criminally charged for his murder.
The 29-year-old Lindani Myeni was shot and killed by police in Honolulu in April after he was accused of entering a home in the surrounding neighbourhood, and reportedly displaying erratic behaviour.
A video shared across the globe shows a scuffle ensued between Myeni and the police before one of the policemen opened fire on him.
According to Times Live, Hawaiian Prosecutor Steve Alm held a press briefing on Wednesday, June 29, where he revealed that his office has justified the incident as self-defence.
“The first officer was justified in shooting Mr Myeni in self-defence. The second officer was justified in shooting Mr Myeni in defence of another colleague,” Alm was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Myeni’s wife, Lindsay, took to social media. She describes the announcement as one of the lowest days in her life.
“My worst fear has already come true, there’s nothing more anyone can do to my man. He’s at peace now and that’s still all that matters to me at the end of the day,” she posted.
The Justice for Lindani Myeni Facebook group also indicated that it intends to challenge the prosecution office’s decision.
