A pair of would-be hijackers were intercepted by quick-thinking traffic officers on the morning of Monday, July 6.

“Just after 9am this morning [July 6], officers were refuelling at the Engen garage near the corner of Wetton Road and Rosmead Avenue when they were alerted to screams from the direction of the intersection,” said Maxine Bezuidenhout, City of Cape Town Traffic Service spokesperson. “The officers investigated and spotted four armed suspects trying to hijack a BMW sedan.”

The officers activated their lights and sirens and the suspects jumped into a VW Polo, but the driver collided with another vehicle while trying to get away.

“The officers managed to arrest one suspect, while three others fled on foot,” said Bezuidenhout. “The driver of the Polo claimed to be a victim of the attempted hijacking, but upon further investigation it was found that he was the getaway driver and had been spotted dropping his accomplices at the scene of the crime.”

The driver was also arrested and joined his accomplice in detention at Wynberg SAPS.
