Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertius Simmers, will visit the Bitou Municipality and leadership of the Qolweni community in Plettenberg Bay on Friday, June 18.
This comes after the area was closed down for four days following ongoing protests on the N2, due to housing issues. Public Order Police members were deployed after protests erupted in the area on Monday, June 14.
According to News 24, there have been delays in the Qolweni housing project between the municipality and the contractor. Simmers, who has been dealing with various housing issues in the last year indicated that his department has been offering assistance to the municipality should they be unable to kick off the housing project. However, Simmers reiterated that the council must formally request them to take over this project, SABC reported
Meanwhile, this area is no stranger to rioting as it has happened on various occasions this year, but this incident has lasted the longest, leaving a trail of destruction on the road and unhappy residents and business owners since it started.
