A fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday morning is reported to have claimed the lives of two. The fire began in Salamander Road, Hout Bay, and razed between 20 and 30 homes in the Hangberg Improvement Development Area.
Edward Bosch, City of Cape Town Divisional Commander, reported that 48 firefighters responded to the blaze, along with 8 fire engines, 3 water tankers and one rescue vehicle.
“It took fire fighters just over 5 hours to bring the fire under control. Damping down efforts are still underway,” he added.
The fire has left 90 people displaced, according to Bosch, brigade personnel was on scene to assist.
Several were also injured, including one adult male and one adult female who suffered from third-degree burns, and one woman being treated for smoke inhalation.
It is reported that the victims who perished as a result of the fire include an adult female and one child.
Attempts were made to contact South African Police Services to confirm this, but unfortunately, Cape Town Etc received no response at the time of publication.
