Victoria and Valley roads in Hout Bay have been temporarily closed as a result of protesting on Sunday, August 2. Disa Valley Road and Hout Bay Main Road have also been closed.

According to reports from residents, gunshots can be heard ringing through the area. There is also rubbish and tree stumps being burned in Penzance Street, says Jermaine Carelse, City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

Protest action was also reported in areas such as Kraaifontein and Delft over the weekend.

On Saturday, August 1 a Metro Police Officer was burned when he was injured by a petrol bomb during protest action in Kraaifontein.

“At around 2pm, staff were confronted with a crowd of approximately 600 people in Bloekombos. A petrol bomb was hurled at a hardened vehicle, resulting in the officer sustaining injuries to his face and arms. He managed to extinguish the flames, avoiding further injuries to his colleagues,” said Janine Wilemans, spokesperson for City Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
