An alleged “taxi hitman” has been detained in connection with the taxi-related shooting that took place at the Hout Bay taxi rank last week and left four people dead. Bandile Rotyi, the suspected gunman, appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday in absentia.
As reported by TimesLIVE, investigating officer Captain Alfred Barker informed the court that Rotyi could not appear in court due to gunshot wounds on both of his legs. He has now been charged with four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Rotyi was out on bail for a previous firearms offence when the shooting took place.
The shooting, which lasted only minutes, is believed to have been related to an ongoing dispute about taxi routes between the largest of Cape Town’s taxi associations. The four bodies of the gunman’s victims were discovered on a Hout Bay sports field on Monday, April 1.
The case has been postponed until April 15.
