For many, coffee is an elixir for life. That first sip awakens our senses and makes us ready to face the world.

Being a stimulant, caffeine is often recommended in limited doses. However, some like to push the boundaries and enjoy cup after cup each day.

Caffeine can be both good and bad for your health. It can help protect against heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers, but also cause anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. As such, it is important not to overdo it.

A study by Harvard researchers, published inĀ The New England Journal of Medicine, may have just found out the answer to how much coffee is too much.

Based on their review of 95 available studies, researchers concluded that people should consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine in a day. This is equivalent to four to five 8-ounce (236.588ml) cups of most regular-sized coffees.

According to researchers, four to five cups is the perfect amount to enjoy the benefits of caffeine without the negative side effects.

However, results differ from person to person. Some are more sensitive to caffeine and feel its effects faster, whereas others have faster metabolisms and can thus consume more in a day. It is important to listen to your body and make sure not to overdo it.
