The State of the Nation Address (SONA) is nearly upon us, and although it plays a pivotal role in letting the country’s citizens know the plans for the running of South Africa, it is a nightmare for any motorist in Cape Town’s CBD.

According to Richard Coleman, City of Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson, both the national government and South African Police Services (SAPS) have requested that extended road closures be put in place between 6am and 12am on the day of SONA (Thursday, June 20).

Limited road closures will be in effect on Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, JuneĀ 1, and will begin from 5pm on each respective day to accommodate rehearsals for the event.

“Road-users are requested to acquaint themselves with the closures and to plan their routes accordingly,” Coleman said.

Wale Street, between Burg and Adderley Street, will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday between 5pm and 10pm, as well as on Thursday between 6am and 11.45pm.
