One person has died while hundreds have been left homeless after a fire swept through the Jim se Bos informal settlement in Philippi on Monday, June 21.
As reported by SABC, three firefighters have also sustained injuries in the fire. Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse indicated that the response included 17 fire fighting vehicles and 72 firefighters as the conditions were not good. According to Carelse, it took firefighters nine hours to extinguish the fire, IOL reports.
Meanwhile, the N2 highway near Tsitsikamma on the Garden Route has been reopened following a veld fire. More than 200 firefighters from both the Western Cape and Eastern Cape continued to fight two blazes in the area last night.
