Health experts have said that it’s too early to talk of a third wave, as countrywide figures have not been tallied.
This came as the Western Cape recorded a 5% increase in positive COVID-19 cases just before the Easter weekend.
EWN reported at the time that a 16% rise had been recorded in the Cape metros.
On Monday, April 5 IOL indicated that 381 more infections had been reported in the province.
“With the recent easing of restrictions and the current holiday period, we just have to wait and see if it will have any effect on the infection rates.
“All provinces have flat-lined or shown slight spikes within the last couple of weeks. They have all stabilised, which is good news. There is certainly ongoing community transmission so we need to be really vigilant,” CSIR senior researcher Dr Ridhwaan Suliman was quoted as saying.
News24 reported last week that the occupancy of COVID-19 beds in metropole was 15%, 16% in the George drainage area, 21% in the Paarl district and 23% in the Worcester drainage area.
