Former President Jacob Zuma has been making headlines this week after being sentenced to 15 months in prison. However, supporters of Zuma are declaring that he will “not be going to jail even if he elects to do so.”
The embattled ANC veteran’s home was buzzing with activity as supporters fired gunshots in the air while leading a procession from Eshowe to his homestead of Nkandla to show their support on Thursday reports The Sowetan Live.
The outrage by his supporters comes after Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Constitutional Court after he failed to appear before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture to give evidence.
The leader of the group and an ANC branch chairperson from the eThekwini region, Lindani Siewala, had this to say about the ruling:
“We are here with a single mission. Our message is clear: we say what is happening to Zuma is wrong and unfair,” stated Sicwala.
“Therefore we are saying, be it his family saying he must hand himself over or not, we are saying he is going nowhere. We will sleep here and wake up here and if the police come, they will have to do so with a helicopter because we will stop them.”
The Concourt’s ruling has been met with praise by much of the nation but has been juxtaposed with indignation. Edward Zuma, the son of former president Jacob Zuma, has stated that police would have to kill him before arresting his father has been a vocal supporter of his father.
In a media briefing to journalists outside the family home in Nkandla, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the young Zuma declared that authorities “will have to pass by him” and that he was willing to “lay down his life for President Zuma,” as per SABC News.
